I started homeschooling this past school year; 2024-2025 for Transitional Kindergarten. Let me tell you I never would have thought I would be a homeschooling mom! It was never something I thought of doing or even dreamt of doing. But I absolutely fell in love with homeschooling and quit frankly am unsure when or if I will ever stop!
My oldest son did go to Preschool a few days a week and he loved it! He enjoyed going to school and learning and he learned so much over the course of a year. But I hated taking him to school, I hated missing him when he wasn’t home, I hated the anxiety of wondering if everything was going to be okay while he was there, and I hated not being able to be a part of his learning journey, even though it was only two days a week.
Both of my sons also have hearing loss and my sons listening fatigue was intense when he was done with his 2.5 hours of preschool. Literally, he would get in the car and would take his hearing aids out and his glasses off and just wouldn’t say anything for the entire drive home. And when we would get home he would need to just zone out and relax for at least an hour before he was able to do another activity.
Knowing this about my son I knew that him going to TK for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week was just going to be A LOT for him. And since I am a Stay At Home Mom I knew that I could just homeschool him.
My husband and I went back and forth on the idea of homeschooling, my husband was hesitant about the idea because he wanted our son to have a full school experience and have the opportunity to socialize and experience learning in a classroom. But after doing some research, reading some books, and sharing what I learned with him he realized that homeschooling was a good option for us at this time.
The journey of beginning to homeschool was a fun process! Researching TK curriculum’s and activities that we could do to get out of the house and socialize was enjoyable! I ended up deciding to do the Good and Beautiful Preschool curriculum because it was straight forward, easy to understand for me to teach him and for my son to understand. I also purchased a Math curriculum; Preschool Math at Home on Amazon and we powered through that book and also did Singapore Math Dimensions PK B which took us to the end of the school year. My son also did an ASL class through Outschool, we also did an art class, gymnastics, piano, and speech therapy.
I tried to keep my son busy and active throughout the week. This helped us to avoid being stuck in the house, it allowed him to socialize with other kids outside of his brother, and it allowed him to learn to follow directions and listen to other adults. Which are all things that he would be learning in a classroom setting.
Homeschooling was a really fun journey and I am so incredibly thankful that it is something that I get to do for my son and soon both of my kids. I am looking forward to starting our Kindergarten year in the Fall.
I am hoping to share my homeschool journey with everyone and hopefully inspire people who may be on the fence to homeschool!
